How the two are kept apart

romance signal and threnne are both mine. Here's the conflict, and how I work to avoid it.

The conflict

romance signal is free research into the advice romance writers get. threnne is a company I founded that makes tools for romance readers and writers, including ARC software, which is also the subject of the Launch Study. I run both, and they serve the same people. That's a conflict of interest, and you should know about it up front. Below is how I keep it from shaping what I publish.

What each one is

romance signal: free research. I check the advice romance writers get and publish what I find, with my sources.

threnne: a small company in Dallas, Texas, that I founded. It makes tools for romance readers and writers. Currently, every tool is free.

How I keep them apart

  • Separate data. romance signal's lists and tables are walled off inside threnne's accounts and never used by threnne. Privacy has the details.
  • Separate sign-ups. Signing up for one doesn't sign you up for the other.
  • No opinions on tools. romance signal doesn't recommend other companies' tools, threnne's or anyone else's.
  • Findings are public. Everything I publish here is open to everyone. There is nothing threnne can use that other people can't see.
  • Evidence in the open. If a piece ever touches a kind of service threnne charges for, it uses only directly cited data, with no opinion.
  • Free, for now. Every threnne tool is free today, and threnne's apps tryst and flourish are free, forever. One day, threnne may charge for a different tool. If that happens, the rules above apply to it.

What every piece does

  • Shows its sources. Every piece ends with a Receipts list.
  • States its limits. Every case study and Notebook entry says what it can't show.
  • Corrects mistakes in public, on the Corrections page.

What I can't promise

I can't promise this makes me neutral. I run both, and I choose the questions. What I can do is show my work so you can judge it. If a finding looks like it leans toward something threnne makes, email me and I'll review it.
